Career Pathway (ACCA Talk)

Career Pathway (ACCA Talk) was held on 24 November 2011, Thursday, 3pm at KAG03. It was conducted by Mr Ang Wen How from ACCA and were attended by almost 100 students, majority from BAT (Bachelor of Accounting). During the talk, Mr. Ang has given a lot of information on ACCA such as the examination papers,  module of ethics, career prospect of becoming an ACCA student, and benefits of joining the ACCA Accelerate Programme. There was also a demonstration conducted to help students to comprehend better and we also played some games to make the students feel energize. By the end of the talk, we carried out a survey to get feedback from students about the talk and some future ACCA programmes that they might be interested in.

Notice To All Members

RM200 Book Vouchers

As announced by the Higher Education Minister in the press on 10 December 2011, students in public and private local institutions of higher education, matriculation and Form Six can collect their RM200 book vouchers from 3 January 2012. Only Malaysian students are eligible to receive the book vouchers.

UTAR has submitted a list of students (full-time and part-time) pursuing foundation/degree and postgraduate programmes to the Ministry of Higher Education for this purpose.

Students can collect their book vouchers from their respective faculty from 3 January 2012 to 31 March 2012. Please bring along your identity card.

The book vouchers are valid for three months from 1 January to 31 March 2012. The book vouchers are not exchangeable for cash. Students can redeem the book vouchers from all participating bookshops.

In this regard, UTAR is making arrangement for book fairs to be held in the campuses to facilitate students to redeem their book vouchers. The venues and dates of the book fairs will be announced later.

Subject: Exchange of Unused RM0.70 UTAR Bus Ticket

Please be informed that students who have the unused RM0.70 bus ticket can exchange for RM0.80 bus ticket by topping up RM0.10 each for unused RM0.70 bus ticket at Division of Finance counter. This arrangement is valid from 13 December 2011 until 15 February 2012. Please take note that the RM0.70 UTAR bus tickets you have purchased are valid until 31 December 2011.

Google Prevails In "Gadget" Trademark Lawsuit - "Gadget" Term is Generic

Firefly Digital Inc, a web development company, sued Google last year in Louisiana federal court for its use of the term "Gadgets" to refer to its line of "Google Gadgets" product.  "Google Gadgets" are applications that allow you to add features such as news feeds, stock quotes, maps, and interactive games to your existing iGoogle account and Google desktop. What can be said about the role of the Corporate Secretary that has not already been said? Clearly, the position of Corporate Secretary has evolved over the years and, in particular, since the corporate scandals of the 2000s and the most recent financial crisis. For some organizations, except, possibly, in the realm of holding corporations and some non-profits, gone are the days when the Corporate Secretary was a mere corporate record custodian, certifier of corporate organizational facts and note-taker. Bylaws, board mandates, shareholder agreements and other governance documents, not to mention job descriptions, may or may not fully describe the expectations that now often go with the role. (Link)

Canada: Take Care When Dealing With Letters Of Credit - A Recent Case From Ontario

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice recently considered an application by Piaggio & C.S.p.A. ("Piaggio"), an Italian manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters, arising from a dispute in connection with a refusal of payment by the Bank of Nova Scotia (the "Bank") under three letters of credit (the "LCs"). The case (2011 ONSC 2567) is instructive of the care required when taking letters of credit and presenting them for payment. (Link)

Whether we like it or not, social media is here stay. It impacts and affects not only our personal lives, but also our employment relationships. What is becoming apparent, however, is that when social media is involved, the line between our work lives and personal lives is not always clearly defined. Whether we are talking about Facebook, blogs, MySpace or Twitter, issues arise with respect to privacy rights, workplace harassment and bullying, client/customer confidentiality and the employer's business reputation. As the following three decisions illustrate, if an employee's use of or commentary on social media can be viewed as insubordinate, harassing and/or disparaging of co-workers, or damaging to the employer's business, then discipline, including termination, can result even if the comments were not made at work or during working hours.
