PROCA Talk and Games

PROCA is a recruiting company for Accounting and Finance Professionals throughout Malaysia and Asia Pacific. The PROCA Talk was held on 23rd November 2012, Friday at KAG01 from 11.00 a.m. to 1 p.m. The talk was given by Mr. Derek Wong from PROCA Recruitment Company with the talk title “Challenges of Accountant”. At 10.30 am, 2 staff had been sent to lead speaker to the venue and student registration had been started on the counter.


Event emcee had given a welcome speech to Mr. Derek Wong on 11.00 am. The talk was started officially on 11.10am. During the talk, the speaker was using Microsoft Power Pint Slides to deliver information. The talk was in fact beneficial to us as we are starting to build up our careers. Besides that, the speakers even shared their experiences and decisions that they made earlier on in their lives. They gave us advice in making decisions which are necessary during the earlier stage of our lives and to not make the same mistakes as they did.


At 12.15 pm, games had been played to re-energize students. These games teach us that no matter how small something is, it might be important in building up our career. In addition, Q & A section had been given by the speaker to ensure students had comprehended better about the information. Students also had been give two enquiry sources to obtain more career information.


At 12.30 pm, the talk was ended with souvenir ceremony to Mr. Derek Wong as an appreciation from Accounting Society.

Cima Business Game: The Next Entrepreneur

     On 2nd November 2012, Friday in UTAR Sg. Long never get boring with the arrival of CIMA Members in the campus. This is an event held by Accounting Society, with the collaboration of Career Development Club. In the early of 9am, the helpers from each society are all ready to work out and the prizes lying down on the table waiting for the winner to grab it home.

     What is CIMA Business Game? It is a game of decision making, including multi-skills and strategic thinking in pursuit the highest profit among all participating team. This 4 hours game is divided into 7 parts, namely 4 quarters of business challenges and 3 special challenges.

     The game starts by all 8 teams forming their group. They divide the 4 members into different position and give the company an identical name. In today game, they are going to set up a pizza business. Next, they are given full information of the business and participants are going to make their first decision, which is bidding for a business site. Decision is written on an answer sheet and results are provided by a computerized analyzing program. When each team gets their business site, there goes the business challenge!

     In the first quarter of business challenges, the decisions made covered the price and quality of product, advertising, salary of worker and market research. Every value decided will highly affect the final profit, based on the computerized calculation. In order to increase the fun of the game, at the end of each quarter, only the highest profit will be written on the board anonymously. Hence, only the group with the highest profit knows that is their figure while the other knows their distance from the highest profit. Same concept goes to the 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th quarter, however more complicated situations are provided to increase the difficulties of the game.

     In order to obtain result for each business challenge quarter, a short period will be occupied for data key in and result printing. However, we do not let participants wait the result freely. To ensure the time is fully utilized, we have organized special challenges. A successful businessman does not rely on his entrepreneurship only, it required creativity and innovation too. We have poster designing competition, pizza box making competition and jingle competition. Under the cheer and laughter we observe participants’ drawing talent and funniest jingle ever heard.

     The game ends at 1.35pm. The highest profit team outstand other team with a total profit of 91 thousands dollar. All winners of business challenges and special challenges received attractive prizes from CIMA and organizing society. At the end of event, participants share their experiences and outcomes from this meaningful game. The game ends with the gift giving to CIMA as a token of appreciation. Without CIMA, the game would not accomplished successfully.

ACCA Conference 2012

     This was the first time for 5 participants to participate in such a big event representing UTAR Accounting Society (Sungai Long campus). The participants would liked to thank the sponsors who fully sponsor all the five participants from our campus. This event was a 2 day 1 night event at Equatorial Bangi held on the 8th and 9th November 2012.

     There were about 17 universities which include University Malaya and HELP University as well as over 300 participants. It was really crowded as participants approached the big companies booth to submit their resume. The program started with the opening speech by Ms. Jennifer Lopez, the Head of ACCA Malaysia.

     The first session was a talk given by Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) which shares about the art of communication and the importance of rapport building through physical and psychological matching and mirroring. Nowadays, many people think that poor communication leads to leadership failure, however the speaker rectified this by saying that whatever responses resulted from our communication, it is just a FEEDBACK, not a FAILURE. For example, it is interesting to note that when somebody ask you NOT to think about the colour blue, surprisingly our brain will automatically generate ‘blue colour’ scene first before it change to no “blue”.

     Participants were enriched by a panel discussion of all Big Four company, talking about the ultimate taboos at workplace. Youngsters nowadays are self-centred and used to have a lot of enjoyment which will bring troubles when they step into complex and intriguing society in future. Hence, Gen Y’s are advised to be patient and not to request anything that is unrealistic in return, said Ms. Lee Sue Chuen who is the People, Performance and Culture director at KPMG. In relation to Gen Y’s attitude, partner of Ernst & Young, Ms. Lee Soo Fern advised us not to job-hop so much. We should build our career and accumulate our career equity. Also, Mr Alex Lee, HR director from Deloitte advised us not to get distracted from our responsibilities by social media. In short, companies love Gen Y’s vibrancy and our flexibility. However, we should be more realistic about our career expectation, said Mr. Chan Chong Kong, Executive Director of PwC Malaysia.

     Before another session started, there was another group of panel discussion which shared about shared services. This type of service is still considered new and growing rapidly in Malaysia. Personnel from shared services companies such as MDeC were invited to introduce shared services concept as one of the new career path for accounting students to consider after graduation.

Following on was the highlighted talk of the day which is called ‘Fire Eating: Breakthrough to Success‘ which enlighten lots of participants as the important catalysts to become an effective leader. To be a successful leader, we need 3Cs (Character, Competency and Courage):

• Character: the inward motivation to do what is right in every situation. Jim Collins in his book ‘Good to Great' shows the pyramid of leadership. The pyramid started with a ‘High Capable Individual’, followed by ‘Competent Team Member’, ‘Competent Leader’, ‘Effective Leader’ and the last and most important Level 5 leadership are ‘Personal Humility’ and ‘Professional Will’. 
• Competency: refers to functional, personal, leadership and domain mastery within ourselves. We must equipped with learning agility so that we can close our competency gap between reality and our vision. 
• Courage: talking about changing and breaking through our current comfort zone to achieve another level of proficiency and competency. At the end of this talk we were asked to ‘eat fire’ in front of people.

     The next day we had our breakfast at Cafe Lavista. The food were nice. After breakfast, participants headed to the lawn and had their next program there. We were divided into 10 groups; each consisted of 30 members. The group forming is for station games.

     Lastly, although it was raining at the end but we have sunny smiles on all our faces. It was an awesome experience and we hope we can join again next year.
